Bay Ridge Tornado: Recovery Continues

nymarathon2007 017, originally uploaded by bayridgephantom.

Most of the houses that were knocked out by the tornado are still uninhabited, but a lot of work is being done. Here, see 337 Bay Ridge Avenue.

I spoke with Edgar, from one of the still-damaged houses down 68th Street. He hopes to be back home by Thanksgiving Day.

Please tell me that won't be the final look for the destroyed cornices. That would be a real shame....this block is very charming for a main street.

It's been a little overwhelmingly since the tornado. Those loss of those six houses hit this community really hard. Sure, it's just six houses out of thousands, but more than just those houses, that spiral of wind blew away our collective psyche. Bay Ridge hasn't been the same since. People walk around with blank expressions. Children have a hard time sleeping at night. Grown men cry. It's really tough. I don't know if we'll ever forget this devastation.

Hang in there.

I was not there that day, so I can only comment so much. Time hopefully will heal this. And we can look forward to the houses re-opening one by one, and to the two damaged churches returning to full repair. Which hopefully not take too very long.

I'm glad to hear that there is an end in sight for at least some of those who were displaced.

We were fortunate here that the only losses were trees, and the cars they fell on. Damage to homes and other buildings was minor.
