Cars Vandalized on 68th Street at 5pm ish Today

Tom was able to put the unit back in-it had been hanging loose. But the mirror was smashed

At appx 5pm at least two cars on 68th Street between Third and Fourth Avenues had the drivers side rear view mirrors ripped off the vehicle.

A group of 17-18 year olds described as " Albanian " in appearance were observed by kids playing on the block. The vandalism was reported to the 68th Precinct, who sent officers to take a statement from one of the vehicle owners.

This is not the first time this has happened in this general vicinity.

You said that group of possibly Albanian 17-18 year olds were observed by kids playing on the block.

What does "observed" mean? Were these teenagers observed as merely being on the block or were they actually observed in the act of vandalising the cars?

There is a large apartment bldg. on the south side of 68th between Ridge & 34rd where many of the residents are Albanian. But the residents of that quiet building don't have a reputation as troublemakers.

They were personally observed vandalizing the cars.

This was reported to the 68th Precinct last night.

The kids were afraid to intervene as the vandals were older and bigger than them.

Well, every nationality has teenagers who'll vandalize stuff. Sorry your car was involved, it is so annoying to have one's car deliberated tampered with. Hope they figure out who it was.

We only report the facts!

My car was not involved. It was someone else down the block.

Keep up the good work on this blog. I grew up on 79th and 6th, and am now living in Kansas. You don't know how much you will miss NY until you are gone.

All the best.

My wife parked our old car there a year and a half ago and came back to find she had no side view mirrors.

I'll avoid that block even if I have to get up early the next morning to deal with alt-side parking.

Hmm

Maybe time to attend the next community meeting at 68th Precinct.

What does an "Albanian" look like exactly?

Sometime between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, my car's driver's side-view mirror was bashed in front of 7101 4th Avenue. I didn't notice it until Sunday morning when I went to get the car. Not only did I get a ticket from the Traffic folks, there was a card for Jose's Auto Body Repair slipped into my driver's window. There were no other cards for other the other cars along the block. Coincidence?

Also, the card doesn't provide an address other than suggesting somewhere in the zip code 11215, a New Jersey number and an AOL address.

I reported the incident to the 68th.

The Phantom said...

Please challenge the ticket. They have to give you a reasonable amount of time to repair the damage.

We'll back you up with statements that there have been a rash of incidents in the 68th Precinct - including one from the guy whose damaged mirror is in the photo, I am sure.

The kind officers at the six-eight advised me on the challenge. I'm putting together the Incident report along with a copy of the auto body card. I fully intend to fight it.

Thanks for the support.

Hi News 12 Brooklyn,

stealing tires is a rampart business for those thieves, why not drive around colonial rd & narrows av after midnights, you probably can see people thieves in action.

These guys are journalists and they will need facts if they're going to do a story.

I will try to put them in touch with " Tom " who was one of the victims here.

The same thing was done to my car on 77th street. I didn't bother filing a police report.

Anonymous said...

P.S. It was done months ago, not recently.

My passenger side mirror was popped out from its holder. Happened the end of May on 79th street between Ridge and Colonial.

Hi News 12 Brooklyn,

can you also do a story with USPS mail boxes in Bay Ridge.. majority of those blue and dark green mail boxes are vandalized but no one seems to repaint them for many months/years.. It's such a shame and lost of civility!

also the 77th R train station is known for fare jumpers (people literary jumps over the turnstile to skip the fare payment)..

^ Good to hear the farebeaters @77th are literary people.

That's a step up for Bay Ridge.

I guess it is the economy, because two days ago at the Starbucks on 95 St/3rd Av, the barista caught an elderly woman stealing a $5 sandwich from the shelf. The old lady said she would have to pay later and the barista let her go (she's at least 75 years old)

Anonymous said...

addition to above:
the barista let her go free - without the sandwich that she didn't pay

I had my passenger side mirror ripped off last week, and had my front hood "tagged up" on with spray paint last month. I filed a police report for both incidents. It took the 68 pct. over a hour and a half to get to my car. It was a monday night, if it was Thursday or Friday they would have been faster, since I live across the street from Salty Dog, and the 68 love rapping to the chicks stumbling out of the salty dog. God forbid they ticket the cars parked at the bus stop or fire hydrants. Opps those cars have "official police business" plaques in their windows.

Anonymous said...

Are you pissed that your car was vandalized or at the police?

I'm sure the police would have done something if they had seen the vandals. At least, they didn't give you a 4-hour window to be there a few days from when you called like the cable company.

Also, it would be nice if you proofread your comment before posting too.

Still, I feel for you as these car vandals should be publicly humiliated and fined severely in addition to having to pay for the damages.

My Car was stripped in my driveway on Narrows and 83rd. Seats, Airbags, dashboard, Instrument panel and steering wheel. It will cost me $4,000. Bay Ridge is the new easy pickings for thieves in Brooklyn, the lawless patrons of the drug bars on Third Ave and the stripped, or burned out cars you see on the streets are there for everyone to see. The 68th St. Pct won't do anything about it. Welcome back to the '70's.

Did News 12 ever do the report?
I got both my side mirrors stolen about a month ago when parked on 74th btwn 3rd and 4th. A neighbor also had the chrome part of their side mirrors stolen a couple weeks ago (parked on the same block).

I should've filed a police report, but I lost faith in the 68th precinct when I reported a couple hoodlums throwing everyone's trash cans all over the streets, and no squad car ever showed up.
