Key Food - 69th Street Location Update

I know that there has been no activity at the site for some time, but the deal's not dead!

I contacted Key Food, who advised that:
  • there will be activity there next week
  • the store should open in " a couple of months "

Can you believe these Key Food people? I would not. I heard June-July,if they can get more money.

The guy was very specific that there would be activity next week. Lets see.

I can understand something like this getting tied in the city's permitting red tape.

I wish them well.

I hope your optomistic view is right, Phantom.

If it does finally open I sure hope it is better than the C-Town that used to be on 69th Street!

Great, except that they got cited on 2-10-09 for work w/o expired permit and violation of a stop work order.

C-Town was better than the Met Food they had there before.

I presume you mean "work WITH an expired permit."
And yeah, that's what the DOB site says - they got hit on 2/10/09 for expired permit with no renewal, and seven guys doing interior renovation despite SWO.
They got hit for a previous SWO violation in December, and owe a $5k fine.

I swear, stuff like this has become a Bay Ridge tradition.

Bring back the A&P.

Yeah, write a blog article about this second stop work order for Key Food:

Yeah, agreed. How can Key open on sked if it has a stop work order due to expired permit, two violations of that order, plus unpaid fine (and, obviously, no new permit)?

With that history: How 'professional' is this operation? I mean, it's supposed to be a supermarket + high-profile neighborhood thing - not some guy ripping his house apart on the sly while trying to dodge inspectors.

While we're waiting w/bated breath for Key Food ... is anyone covering the # of business closings in Bay Ridge?

In a lot of 3rd Ave., there are 1-2 closings per block (including John's Deli and the bakery near Starbucks in the 70s).
South of 86th, 4th Ave lost Happy Pets and a big bank/mortgage office.
86th St. lost KB Toys, Circ City, and a small discount store, the WaMu is closing, and there's an empty store next to Zales.

This might seem like diddleysquat - but it's early in the recession, the empty stores look bad, and warm-weather Con Ed bills haven't even hit yet.

Hey Anon 12:08
There are many reason for us bein g in a depresstion right now. One of them is people living in Bay Ridge, spend extra money just to buy something cheaper outside of Bay Ridge. I say support Bay Ridge or don't complain.

Sorry, but you CANNOT buy everything in Bay Ridge, especially in this economy.
- BR has no real housewares store, only one bookstore, and no big hardware store (and the hardware stores it has are spotty and pricey - unless you're just buying washers and wood shims).
- Its only dep't store (Century 21) has varying/incomplete stock, since it's a discounter.
- Not everyone wants to buy major electronics and appliances at Radio Shack, PC Richard, or some small storefront.

Yes, it has some chain clothing stores on 86th. But it has no cluster of varied anchor stores that attract foot traffic - and most of its stores are "accessory" businesses: bars & eateries, gift shops, hair salons, specialty (and not inexpensive) clothing stores, and a ton of 99-cents junk stores.
So if people have real lives and real shopping to do, they'll go online or hit a mall - and buy clothing, books, towels, toys and a circular saw in one trip, w/better selection and pricing. They'd be crazy NOT to.

If I bought only what was available in BR, I'd have (or would HAVE to have) a seriously limited home, work and personal life.

Whaaaaaaat?
The depression is all over the U.S. and globe, not just in Bay Ridge!
Nor is Bay Ridge exempt from it!
People aren't spending, b/c they're scared expletive-less about jobs, money, benefits, and homes, or *lost* their jobs, money, benefits and homes, while prices of everything but houses go sky-high!

You are asking *a lot* when you expect people to "spend extra money" for Bay Ridge's sake. If they *had* the extra, they'd pinch every penny, pay critical bills, or save the $$ as a disaster cushion.

It's silly to call this a " depression ". It's a nasty recession, and those who use the D word have never seen a depression, so they call it something even worse than it is.

I make an effort to spend money in the neighborhood, and I encourage others to do so also. Most anyone can do this, regardless of where they are economically. I will write on this before long.

I can not speak for Anonymous 10:19, but what I think he's saying is, You guys don't get it. MOVE OUT OF BAY RIDGE!!!!!!!!!!!

If you care about the neighborhood, that is the LAST thing you should be telling people to do.

Agreed. BR isn't a religion or a mummified historic village: It needs spenders ... and by default, anyone who lives in BR must patronize the small businesses it DOES have (food places, drycleaners, bakeries, salons, drugstores).

But there'd be more traffic into these smaller shops if BR had more varied/larger "magnet" stores. And people can't spend and support the neighborhood if the stuff they need isn't HERE.

Keyfood on 69th street will create the big supermarket buzz that's missing in this part of Bay Ridge. It is desperately needed and might keep our shoppers in the neighborhood.

I heard they are opening around Labor Day - from what you can see, does that sound about right?
