German Restaurant

Arturo sent me an e-mail asking about a new German restaurant in Bay Ridge.

Arturo, I believe that Schnitzel Haus, located at 7319 Fifth Avenue, is the place you were thinking about. ( Phone 718-836-5600 )

I haven't eaten there yet, but I did stop in this afternoon. It's a bright, clean, place. They serve both lunch and dinner. The food looks to be that simple and good German food that I really like, including schnitzels, sausages, various other pork, veal fish and lamb dishes. German beer on tap, a reason for visiting in itself.

Stop by for a takeaway menu if you want to plot your meal in advance.

I'll be there soon. Arturo, see you there!

My worst ever restaurant experience was at the Schnitzel Haus. Me and my girlfriend decided to eat there about a month after it opened, excited for a new German venue since we both love the food. We were seated and that about ended the service for the entire night. I had to go to the bar myself to get drinks. And after waiting patiently for about 20 minutes we finally had our orders taken. We figured it might be some time for the food to arrive since the menus have disclaimers about the food preparation time. But new restaurant or not, there is no excuse for waiting 2 hours for your food. Turns out they gave our food away to another table and we waited there for nothing. We were more upset about not being able to try the food than anything else. We walked out without tipping the awful waitress we had. After that let down, we walked over to Les Babouches for some great Moroccan food.

OUCH! That sounds awful. I hope that there have been changes....

Phantom, thanks for the information! I will be sure to check it out and hope the service is better :)

Schnitzel Haus is honestly, just plain awful. Greasy schnitzel served with French Fries (huh?), kitschy uniforms.

The beer was good, and authentic, but overpriced.

These other guys must be crazy. I've eaten at the Schnitzel House twice so far, and both times were great. It is so nice to have authentic german food in bay ridge brooklyn. I understand they had some problems in the beginning, but now the're running full force. Service is good and the food is excellent, not to mention the great selection of german beers on tap. I woould definetly recommend checking this place out, but you might have to make a reservation ,the've been packed on weekends with live music.

I'll check it out. I understand that new restaurants can have problems--which will usually kill them--but if they've fixed the problems I will cut them slack.

We really need a restaurant like this!

And good German beer on tap will cost more than most other beers--to me the if the taste is wonderful, I'll pay more for it.

Good German beer is not that easy to find here. There are some good places in Williamsburg, and there is Killmyer's, a terrific German joint out by the Outerbridge in Staten Island, but otherwise, the good stuff is hard to find.

I agree with anonymous that posted on 9/30 and phantom-- restaurants need some time to get into their groove when they first open, be nice! I have eaten at the Schnitzel Haus three times already and I have to say the food and service is great. I love the girls outfits and quite frankly the beers are the best german tap beer I've tasted anywhere. FYI I heard the chef at Schnitzel was the head chef at Killmyers. Definetly check this place out... plus its in bayridge yay!

The service had to find its footing when it was first opened. However, give it another chance since the food really is quite good and authentic german food. Beer is great as well

Great authentic German food. My parents both from the "old Country" are VERY particular about how their "homeland" food is presented and fo course tastes. Both were Extremley satisfied with the head chefs(UWE) expertise. They also recently had siblings visiting the US for the 1st time abd they also enjoyed the experience. My understanding is that the Schnitzel Haus is undergoing some changes in management and await an even more enjoyable experince there. I have had 5 VERY enjoyable and tasteful engagements on the 2nd floor party room since they opened and will continue to have parties there since everyone raves about the festivities for weeks afterwards. I think this is a great highlight for Bay Ridge and wish them the best of luck! A VERY SATISFIED German Family!

I cant agree with the comment made about the girls knowing nothing of the food, because we all eat there and carry dishes back and fourth seven days a week. I can almost cook the stuff myself :) Its a great atmosphere, great food and friendly service. ONly the first month or so was slow because of all of the kinks we had to work out. Now the service is perfect. Not to mention a TON of beers!

I went with a large group and as was stated on the menu there was an automatic gratuity added to the bill. I have no problem with that. The bill was split between two credit cards. I paid my portion and drew a line through the tip portion, figuring the waitress would understand that as the tip was already included on the tally she presented to us. The next day I checked my bank balace and they'd added a 20% tip to themselves! Mind you on top of the gratuity they'd already added! Obviously I'll never return.

there seems to bereason this place`should not be a "hit"; but the`service is terrible! kids cannot even pour a beer!. nice enough, but nice does not cut it.

Went here last weekend afternoon with wife & baby; the food was good and so was the beer.

The place was half full and the service was just fine. As for "-i-'s" comment, schnitzel & fries is pretty common in Germany as I understand.

We were happy to find a new bright spot on 5th.

We've been there several times, and I've brought my parents there, and I've always had a good experience. When we first went, and I asked for something in German, I was answered with a dumbfounded look. Now, however, we've had German waitstaff twice in a row. I've enjoyed every dish I've had there. Also, the meals are HUGE at dinnertime. We go about once every two weeks. When we went with a large group, we also had the gratuity added on, but we were NOT double charged despite use of a credit card. I hope the person who had that occur let the management know. It was probably an oversight. Besides, if you didn't sign to that amount, your credit card should be able to refund it.

I had dinner there last night, and I really don't like German food, but I have to admit, it was the best I've ever had and the service was awesome. I am looking forward to going back.

I'LL NEVER GO THERE AGAIN. TERRIBLE SERVICE,BUT THAT MAY HAVE TO DO WITH THE CONSTANT SCREAMING COMING FROM THE KITCHEN.THE FOOD WAS BLAND AND TASTELESS AND FOR THE PRICES THEY CHARGE YOU WOULD THINK THAT AT LEAST YOUR BEER WOULD BE COLD. NEVER AGAIN FOR ME.

My parents have eaten there twice and loved it, so I decided to throw my husband's surprise birthday party there. It was fantastic. Everyone raved about the buffet. There were so many dishes and they all tasted fabulous. The beer was cold and the service was amazing. The whole party said they would be going back in the future.

Seriously folks, German food has never been and never will be advertised as healthy. Don't go to a place that serves food that has an entire history of revolving around heavy foods and complain about how greasy and heavy it is. It is like going to an italian restaurant and complaining about the fact that all they had was pasta and fish! I have eaten here a multitude of times and have always been amazed by the food. It is authentic, and always good - but don't come here if you do not like German food. My wife and I went during Oktoberfest, tons of fun! I have taken my parents when they were in town from the west coast, and we have taken her parents who are natives to Bay Ridge. Everyone has always loved it when I have gone. My only complaint would be that it is relatively busy. The beer is excellent as well. I highly recommend this place, again, only for people who know they like German food. Go, stay, spend some time, relax, and have fun. Soak up some authentic German atmosphere.

Likes it - Our family of five flew in for a vacation in NYC and just happened to rent an apartment in Bay Ridge. After an interesting adventure to Coney Island beach on the 4th of July we set out late to find some dinner. Most Bay Ridge restaurants were closed but we found Schnitzel Haus open. Though rated as a somewhat expensive place we were able to order specials, including a brat complimentary with a liter sized beer, which kept our bill very reasonable. The kids were blown away by my giant mug of spaten pilsner as we watched the Macy's fireworks on the TV behind the bar.My wife's meatloaf was excellent, the brat & sauerkraut was tasty, and a vegeratian plate with spatzel, red cabbage and a giant piece of broccoli. A kids meal and a couple of salads also met the mark. Oh yes, portion sizes were very generous. German leftovers tonight. The waitstaff were very accomodating, answered questions and offered recommendations. Also, it's a nice-looking place. So when we did the thumbs up, thumbs down thing, there were five thumbs up. Six thumbs, with the youngest's double-barreled salute. I heard my wife say to the waiter, "this is the world's best restaurant" (and she isn't the easiest to please).

This German restaurant is by far the best in New York. I have been to every German restaurant around New York and the Schnitzel Haus puts the rest in the dirt. There food is phenomenal. Even on Tuesdays they have buffet nights. 3/4 of it is German and the rest has some others. For example . . . chicken parm. . . ribs. . Many other great dishes. The food is amazing. Even the beer. It’s so fresh and it is nice and cold. They even have the boot for all those beer lovers. Every Friday me and my wife come in for dinner. It is a 45 mile trip for us there and back. It is worth every trip. We have never had a problem. The wait staff is friendly. Even the chef comes out and talks to the customers when he’s not to busy. The owner is great. He has a great personality. He knows when he has to be in "business" personality and he knows when to crack a few jokes. The food is amazing. It is definitely worth every penny.
